What goes in
- 2 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and halved
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 x 10 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 tbsp soy sauce 路 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt 路 1 tsp black pepper
Stir in at the end
- 1 cup grated cheddar, optional
- 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions
Fried onions last, lid off
Put the fried onions in at the start and they turn to wet paste. Scatter them over at the end with the lid off and they stay crunchy, which is the only reason anyone eats this dish.
How to make it
- Put the green beans, mushrooms, onion and garlic in the pot.
- Whisk the condensed soup, milk, soy sauce, garlic powder, salt and pepper together and pour it over. Stir to coat. Lid on.
- Low 3 hours or high 2 hours, until the beans are tender but not grey.
- Stir in the cheddar if you are using it.
- Scatter the fried onions over the top with the lid off.
- Leave the lid off for the last 10 minutes and serve straight from the pot.
Swap it
Frozen green beans work, add them still frozen and keep the same time. Tinned beans are too soft, they fall apart.
